The Tattooist of Auschwitz - Heather Morris

The Tattooist of AuschwitzThe Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

An Odyssean tale of humanity, survival and love in the darkest of times, the Tattooist of Auschwitz is heartwarming and unforgettable.

Enterprising Lale is appointed as Tätowierer at Auschwitz, officially working for the political wing of the SS. This gives him some small privileges, which he uses to smuggle in food and medicines for others in the camp. While tattooing 18-year old Gita’s arm, he looks up and falls hopelessly in love. Thus begins a love story set amidst the suffering and abject terror of history’s most infamous concentration camp.

While I’ve read many books about the horrors of Auschwitz, there’s never been one quite like this. Poignant and beautiful, honest and heartbreaking, Lale’s positive spirit, courage and desire to survive carry this book. I loved every second of this story and after I’d finished I googled Lale and Gita just to find out more about this extraordinary couple.

A remarkable true story set in one of the most difficult times in memorable history, you won’t want to miss this book.
