I absolutely adored this book! Sally Hepworth has crafted a beautifully brilliant, character-driven novel that seamlessly blends mystery and emotion. Elsie ‘Mad Mabel’ Fitzpatrick is a complex and wonderfully built protagonist. She’s sharp-tongued yet tender, prickly yet endearing. I couldn’t help but laugh out loud at some of the things she did and said.
There are two timelines that weave between her childhood and her later years, offering a rich tapestry of storytelling that kept me hooked from start to finish. The supporting characters of quirky neighbors, especially little Persephone, add a warm layer to the book. With clever, yet suspenseful moments and loads of heart, Mad Mabel stands out.
