The Quality of Silence by Rosamund Lupton
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Rosamund Lupton is one of my favorite authors, and The Weight of Silence didn’t disappoint. Set in the extremely harsh landscape of Alaska, this novel is wonderfully atmospheric with lots of suspense, perfect plotting and beautiful prose.
Yasmin and her deaf daughter Ruby arrive in Alaska to try to find Matt, Yasmin’s husband, Ruby’s father, who is missing and presumed dead in an accident. Yasmin is certain her husband is alive and is determined to find him. But as a storm closes in, they realize whatever threatened Matt might be following them.
I loved the character of Ruby, a deaf, 10-year old girl who, despite her own vulnerability, somehow managed to keep Yasmin strong. Ruby’s strength, her courage and bravery, and how she deals with being deaf, are so inspiring, and I really enjoyed her character.
Lupton does such an elegant job of bringing her characters to life and really brings the harsh Alaskan landscape into focus. I look forward to reading more of Rosamund Lupton’s books
